- ODS-2: A reversed-phase stationary phase, where the surface of the silica support is chemically modified with C18 (octadecylsilane) chains. These long hydrocarbon chains provide a hydrophobic environment, allowing for the separation of molecules based on their hydrophobicity. The "2" in ODS-2 indicates a higher coverage of C18 chains on the silica surface compared to ODS-1, and it is typically fully endcapped.
- Fully Endcapped (FE): Endcapping - the process of reacting the remaining silanol groups (Si-OH) on the silica surface with a smaller molecule (like trimethylchlorosilane) after the C18 chains are bonded. Fully endcapped columns have these silanol groups completely reacted, which reduces unwanted interactions with polar compounds and leads to better peak shapes and improved separation.
