MEGA-GAP (Integrated Retention GAP) Fused Silica Capillary GC Columns
The columns of the MEGA-GAP line offer an intelligent solution to use a Retention Gap while eliminating the problems related to Retention-Gaps: in fact, it is often very inconvenient for the user to have to connect a Retention-Gap to the input of the column and in addition the connection point always represents a risky point of loss. MEGA offers the possibility to avoid these problems with this line of columns, in which the Retention-Gap is embedded in the column; Retention-Gap and column are inserted into a single capillary tube!
In this way you can use a Retention-Gap with the ease of use and installation of a normal column, without the complications of connecting a Retention-Gap and avoiding potential and risky points of loss that generate non-repeatable and accurate data. The injection side and the point where the Retention-Gap portion ends and the stationary phase begins are appropriately marked on the column, to make its use even easier, more intuitive and comfortable.
MEGA offers MEGA-GAP columns, available with each stationary phase and size combinations, at no additional cost; i.e. you will pay for these columns like a normal traditional column, based on the internal diameter and length of the column. For example, a MEGA-GAP column of 0.32mm (i.d.) 30m (25m + 5m Ret. Integrated gap) will cost like a traditional 30m 0.32mm (i.d.) column.
The use of Retention-Gaps is linked to the cleaning of the column and the refocusing of the band of the injected sample. When using "dirty" and non-volatile samples injected in large quantities, the column (especially in its first part, in which the sample is often in the liquid phase during the injection phase) can be contaminated. The contamination of the column with the succession of injections leads to a loss of performance of the column itself, with deformed peaks and lowering of the resolution. The Retention-Gap interposed between the injector and the column itself prevent contamination of the column, thus lengthening the life of the column!
In addition, another result of the use of Retention-Gaps is the fact that the injected sample will refocus when it encounters, after the phaseless stretch of the Retention-Gap, the stationary phase of the column; this results in a narrower starting band, producing narrower peaks and thus improving the analysis overall.
