ACQUITY CSH C18 columns were designed to provide alternate selectivity compared to other reversed-phase UPLC columns. These ultra-efficient columns overcome peak shape asymmetry and poor loading capacity for basic compounds, column bleed, and rapid mobile-phase re-equilibration.

Although the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column can withstand working pressures up to 18000 psi (or 1240 Bar), we do not recommend exposing the column to extreme pressures, pH, or temperatures for lengthy periods of time since this will result in shorter column lives.

The ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column is based on Charged Surface Hybrid (CSH) Technology, which allows for low-level surface charge to give better selectivity and outstanding peak shape in low-ionic-strength mobile phases. The CSH technology aids the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column in providing remarkable peak shape and loading capacity, especially for basic chemicals in low-pH and weak ionic strength mobile phase conditions.

The ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column was created with a worldwide marketplace in mind, so you may get the same repeatable procedures and results regardless of where your team(s) and labs are located. It provides methods that are easily transportable and reliable.

The CSH technology employed in the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column gives TFA (Trifluoroacetic acid) peak shape performance without actually utilizing TFA. As a result, it avoids the drawbacks of TFA while providing outstanding outcomes. A more MS-friendly mobile phase, such as formic acid, results in improved peak performance. Furthermore, because formic acid does not have the lingering chromatographic effects of an ion-pairing agent, the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column will allow for faster and easier method development.

You will be able to see gains in resolution, sensitivity, and analysis speed while using UPLC Technology. If your priority is ultra-fast analysis, enhanced throughput while keeping resolution, improving sample resolution while decreasing analysis time, or obtaining ultra-high resolution in your results, the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column will give you the freedom to execute a variety of tests.

We also recommend the ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 VanGuard Pre-column, 130Å, 1.7 µm, 2.1 mm X 5 mm, 3/pk; this VanGuard pre-column connects directly to the intake of the ACQUITY UPLC column, reducing excessive column volumes and leaking by eliminating additional connections.

UPLC Column Protection – VanGuard Pre-Columns

Contamination resulting from the analysis of samples present within complex matrices, or that are particulate-laden, may result in reduced column lifetime if not properly addressed. VanGuard™ Pre-Columns are ideally suited for the physical and chemical protection of ACQUITY UPLC Columns. Directly compatible with UPLC pressures up to 18,000 psi [1241 bar], this ultra-low dispersion direct connect guard column is specifically engineered to preserve the lifetime of an ACQUITY UPLC Column without negatively impacting its separation performance.

Ideally suited for the physical and chemical protection of ACQUITY UPLC columns, VanGuard Pre-columns are specifically engineered to preserve the lifetime of these columns without negatively impacting their separation performance. The ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 VanGuard Pre-Column is designed to be compatible with UPLC pressures up to 18,000 psi (1241 bar) in application areas where chemical and/or particulate contamination can shorten the lifetime of UPLC Columns. With a 2.1 mm ID x 5 mm length, ultra-low volume design, this pre-column efficiently protects performance while offering an approach to higher efficiency, greater resolution, and increased throughput. This is possible because the same stationary phases and column frits are used as in ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 Column, 130Å, 1.7 µm, 2.1 mm X 50 mm, 1/pk.

The ACQUITY UPLC CSH C18 VanGuard Pre-column connects directly to the inlet of ACQUITY UPLC columns, minimizing extra column volumes and mobile-phase leaks that may have resulted if additional connections were needed. This makes them the perfect lab equipment for demanding application areas that analyze complex, unpredictable, and challenging samples on a routine basis. Including bioanalysis, food and beverage, natural products, environmental, and industrial chemical samples, these separations can have a negative impact on column lifetime if the appropriate sample preparation and cleanup procedures are not implemented, calling for a reliable pre-column that eliminates leaks and connection voids.

Benefit from the CSH Technology present in ACQUITY CSH C18 columns, including alternate selectivity compared to other reversed-phase columns, overcoming peak shape asymmetry, poor loading capacity in basic compounds, column bleed, and rapid mobile phase re-equilibration.

Charged Surface Hybrid [CSH] Particle Technology

CSH™ Technology is the next evolution of UPLC® and HPLC particle technology. It affords outstanding batch-to-batch reproducibility, extended pH stability and seamless transferability between UPLC, analytical HPLC and Preparative HPLC system platforms.

Powered by CSH Technology, the ACQUITY UPLC® CSH and XSelect™ HPLC column families provide separation scientists with a wider range of selectivities as well as industry-leading performance in simple, LC/MS-friendly mobile phases.

The progression and evolution of materials science has led to significant advances in chromatographic materials, the most recent of which being hybrid particle technology. Hybrid-based packing materials offer exceptional peak shape and efficiency as well as industry-leading chemical stability. Charged Surface Hybrid [CSH] Technology is the latest advancement in hybrid materials that utilizes a controlled, low-level surface charge to provide enhanced selectivity and exceptional peak shape, particularly in low ionic-strength mobile phases.

The 1.7 µm Charged Surface Hybrid (CSH™) particle is Waters third generation hybrid particle technology. Based on Waters Ethylene Bridged Hybrid (BEH) particle technology, CSH particles incorporate a low level surface charge that improves sample loadability and peak asymmetry in low-ionic-strength mobile phases, while maintaining the mechanical and chemical stability inherent in the BEH particle technology.

The advantages of CSH Technology UPLC chromatography columns include:

  • Superior peak shape for basic compounds
  • Increased loading capacity
  • Rapid column equilibration after changing mobile-phase pH
  • Improved batch-to-batch reproducibility
  • Exceptional stability at low and high pH

CSH particle technology is also available in HPLC particle sizes (3.5 and 5 µm) in the XSelect™ family of HPLC columns, enabling seamless transfer between HPLC and UPLC® technology platforms.

ACQUITY UPLC columns

ACQUITY UPLC columns are the most technologically advanced LC columns ever created and are the only columns designed, tested and certified to withstand the pressures of UPLC Technology. Based upon the highly efficient 1.7 µm Bridged Ethyl Hybrid (BEH) particles and 1.8 µm High Strength Silica (HSS) particles, these columns are the first and only columns that allow separation scientists to achieve maximum speed, sensitivity and resolution without compromise. The particles and chemistries of the ACQUITY UPLC column family were carefully chosen to produce the ideal combination of ultra-performance efficiencies, wide pH range and complementary selectivities. ACQUITY UPLC BEH columns and ACQUITY UPLC HSS columns are the only columns recommended for use with ACQUITY UPLC Systems.

There is more to creating a UPLC particle than synthesizing a small particle. Many HPLC particles do not possess the mechanical stability and structural integrity to withstand UPLC operating pressures (e.g., 15000 psi/1000 bar). Why is pressure tolerance important? In order to realize the efficiency gains of sub-2 μm particles, the ability to routinely operate at higher linear velocities (e.g., higher flow rates) is required. These higher linear velocities combined with small, sub-2 μm particles result in higher operating backpressures. Waters has created two highly efficient, pressure-tolerant UPLC particles: the 1.7 μm Ethylene Bridged Hybrid (BEH) particle and the 1.8 μm High Strength Silica (HSS) particle.
