Alumina very similar to silica; however, the alumina surface tends to be slighly more stable under high pH conditions than unfunctionalized silica. The aluminum oxide surface provides an extremely polar surface for analyte retention and has properties of a Lewis acid. Depending on the sorbent's surface treatment, alumina is available in three forms: Alumina A, Alumina B and Alumina N. Alumina is very senstitive to water and it is important to control the water content and surface activity for reproducible chromatography. Certified Sep-Pak Alumina SPE sorbents are quality controlled to ensure reproducible separations. The cartidges provide superior performance for ultra-low level anlyate detection by reducing the potential for background interferences found in many SPE devices.
