There is a constant need in the pharmaceutical industry to prepare stable crystalline forms of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in a simple and cost-effective way within strict quality and regulatory specifications. In particular, processing so that the proportion of residual solvents, degradation products and other impurities is kept within low limits.
The compound 5-methoxy-2-[[(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridinyl)methyl] sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole, has the generic name Omeprazole™.
- It is known as proton pump inhibitor which inhibits gastric acid secretion.
- Omeprazole™ is used for the treatment of gastric acid related diseases in man, as well as in other mammals.
- It is used to treat the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It is furthermore used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to the oesophagus caused by stomach acid).
- In addition, it may also be given together with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Omeprazole™ is a racemate. It contains a tricoordinated sulphur atom in a pyramidal structure and can therefore exist in equal amounts of both the S and R enantiomers. Pharmaceutical production processes manufacturing generic drugs normally produce compounds in various racemic forms.
