The Exsil 80 range has a higher surface area and greater retention than the original Exsil 100 which in some instances provides a better alternative to Spherisorb.
- Stationary Phase: SAX columns contain a solid support (usually silica or a polymer) with covalently attached strong anion exchange groups, such as quaternary ammonium.
- Strong Anion Exchange: SAX refers to "strong" anion exchange, meaning the functional groups on the stationary phase are permanently charged, even at low pH. This contrasts with weak anion exchange (WAX) where the charge can be pH-dependent.
- Anion Binding: When a sample containing negatively charged molecules (anions) is passed through the column, these anions will bind to the positively charged stationary phase.
